The Toronto Blue Jays have made a somewhat surprising move by signing outfielder Daz Cameron to a minor league contract. While Cameron's performance in the KBO League with the Doosan Bears was impressive, with a .287/.360/.473 slash line over 314 plate appearances, his time in South Korea seems to have been a flash in the pan. The Jays are now giving him another chance in North American baseball, but it's hard to see this as anything more than a stopgap solution.
One thing that immediately stands out is the fact that Cameron has been a veteran of five MLB seasons, yet he has failed to live up to the early promise that saw him traded to Detroit for Justin Verlander in 2017. His career MLB numbers (.200/.258/.326 over 472 plate appearances and 160 games) are underwhelming, and his time in Milwaukee last season didn't exactly go well either, with a .195/.214/.293 slash line in 21 games and 42 plate appearances. At age 29, Cameron is still relatively young, but his time in the majors has been largely uneventful.
What makes this particularly fascinating is the fact that Cameron has posted some big numbers at the Triple-A level over the last few years, on top of his performance in South Korea. His base-stealing skill and his ability to play all three outfield positions adds to his usefulness as a depth player. However, the Jays have other options for the outfield, and Cameron is out of minor league options, which limits his roster flexibility. In my opinion, this signing feels like a bit of a reach, and I'm not sure it will pan out.
If you take a step back and think about it, this move raises a deeper question about the Blue Jays' strategy. Are they simply filling a hole until they can find a better option? Or is there something more to it? One thing that many people don't realize is that Cameron's signing could be a sign of the Jays' willingness to take a chance on players who have fallen out of favor with other teams.
